Group Banter Race to a million

Americans in the 60s loved the Beatles. me in the 2020s thinks they made derivative pop rock that was only good because it came first
This American who wasn't even born before Lennon and Harrison died thinks they're great and were groundbreaking. Won't insist they were the GREATEST EVAH or anything, but I don't think they'd still be so ever-present in pop culture if they were just derivative pop rock. But to each their own!

Can’t be derivative if they did it first ? Everything else after is derivative

you’re welcome lol

listen, fair, but I can't listen to yesterday's music from yesterday's ears. I can only interpret it with the context I have today, and I find that today they have just been passed by more interesting concepts for what music is and can be

again, fair, they were groundbreaking. that doesn't mean theyre good. it just means they were first lol. their best music was toked up on acid tho. some of that stuff really pushed boundaries in an interesting way

Perhaps. But they were groundbreaking and pop music wouldn’t be the same without them forging a path.

you're right, and I probably lose a little bit of that in my feelings about their music. their influence can't be denied. I will say if not them, someone else would have created similar ripples though. doesn't mean I cant appreciate them for doing it (even if it hurts my very soul)
