I think because I spent a couple of my formative “sch” years in UK and then a year now, n the rest back in Cali’ I have picked up a lot of bits of language from each. Both lots sometimes look at me like whatttttt?

I think, personally anyway, being an English speaker we get to comfortable with the fact can get by in most Countries without much effort. Where as other Countries tend to put more into learning other languages

Yep very true. The Uk government tried to have it banned in schools in the 30’s so a lot of people lost their own language.

This is true, and also an arrogant attitude. I talk to people from all over online, and they speak not 2, but multiple languages.

I believe that's what happened with the Gaelic language in Ireland as well if I'm not mistaken

I think it is what happened with most indigenous languages. The English couldn’t do it so they made sure others couldn’t either.

I work with lots of families from other countries and am always encouraging them to continue speaking their home languages with their young children so they don’t get lost.

It was called the Welsh Knot. It was a plank of wood with a rope attached and any child in school caught speaking welsh would have to wear it around their neck until someone else was caught. The one with it at the end of the day was beaten.
