mmmm how fickle. what format & pixel size is the portrait? jpeg, png or resizing to 200x200 might help.
Also, the interface is sluggish/buggy. if you upload the photo, back out of that, to your profile main page and refresh; sometimes it looks like it didn't work, but it actually did.
