What is Coronavirus?

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a new virus that had not been previously identified in humans.
The virus causes respiratory illness (like the flu) with symptoms such as a cough, fever and in more severe cases, pneumonia. You can protect yourself by washing your hands frequently and avoiding touching your face.

How it spreads

The new coronavirus spreads primarily through contact with an infected person when they cough or sneeze, or through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose.

Symptoms

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is characterized by mild symptoms including a runny nose, sore throat, cough, and fever. Illness can be more severe for some people and can lead to pneumonia or breathing difficulties.
More rarely, the disease can be fatal. Older people, and people with other medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease), may be more vulnerable to becoming severely ill.

People may experience:
  • runny nose
  • sore throat
  • cough
  • fever
  • difficulty breathing (severe cases)
Prevention

There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

You can reduce your risk of infection if you:
Clean hands frequently with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water
Cover nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing with tissue or flexed elbow
Avoid close contact (1 metre or 3 feet) with anyone with cold or flu-like symptoms

Treatments

There is no specific medicine to prevent or treat coronavirus disease (COVID-19). People may need supportive care to help them breathe.

Self care

If you have mild symptoms, stay at home until you’ve recovered. You can relieve your symptoms if you:
  • rest and sleep
  • keep warm
  • drink plenty of liquids
  • use a room humidifier or take a hot shower to help ease a sore throat and cough
Medical treatments

If you develop a fever, cough, and have difficulty breathing, promptly seek medical care. Call in advance and tell your health provider of any recent travel or recent contact with travelers.

This article provides great visuals showing why social distancing is important right now, check it out. For most of us, symptoms are going to be mild. But, the less spreading/ slower spread will allow healthcare workers to provide the care needed for emergency situations. The point: now is a time to stop being selfish and only thinking of yourself. Contribute to your community by staying home more for a little bit.

I had a conversation with my sister yesterday about everything that’s happening. She’s a highly intelligent, well educated woman, who I was sure would have a rational, sensible approach to dealing with the current advice being given by the government and health professionals. Boy, was I wrong!! I was so shocked by her blasé attitude to amping up hand washing etc and questioning wether certain social activities should be reconsidered.

This worries me a lot. I’m not a person who panics, but I am a person who likes to stay as well informed as possible and and will take heed of pertinent advice.

If limiting my social activities and washing my hands more than usual, can help save even one vulnerable person from getting severely ill and dying, then I will gladly do this. I only hope most people share my view and take the time to start considering others.

This has been making me worried as well. More so for my family's health and well-being. I won't even go see my family while this is hanging around out of fear of possibly making them sick if I end up catching it without me immediately knowing. I got the "washing the hands frequently" part down already. I've been washing my hands quite religiously before this stuff ever appeared anyhow. Hopefully that combined with being anti-social, I won't end up catching this and then potentially infecting others. Stay safe everyone.

I'm in the high risk group because my immune system is still weakened from treatment. I work in a bakery and it has been VERY busy the last couple of days. We handle food and interact with customers all day, so I don't understand why nobody around here seems to care about that. They've even been saying they're glad it's been so busy lately as if it's a good thing that hundreds of people (potential carriers) are coming in to stock up on junk food they don't need and that won't last when the state goes into lockdown.

I decided to experiment with a big group of customers last night because they came in 15 minutes before closing time and they weren't in a rush to get out. I started fake coughing and sneezing (not on any food. I would never actually do that LOL). Some asked if I had a cold or the virus. I said I had no idea because all of the symptoms I was having came out of nowhere about an hour earlier. It's a small bakery, so social distancing is almost impossible. They still took their time. They still ordered food. And I'm sure they ate it when they left.

DO NOT DO THIS. Nobody needs pastries. If you're worried about needing something for a birthday, get off your lazy ass and make your own damn cake. It's not hard to do. Non-essential businesses are not going to shut down unless the government forces them to because they know customers are still going to show up to throw money at them. Employees have no choice but to show up to work, which puts us at risk. Don't be an asshole.

I’m in the Uk and we are getting info as things progress. Here in Scotland we have just had our first recorded death on Friday from this virus. In the Lothian area. We are getting information passed in by government. In Scotland from tomorrow all gatherings of over 500 have been cancelled so any gigs, events, sports with crowds of that are all cancelled. I have just heard that all ATM machines are going to be closed as well as a precaution. Heard that from a friend who works in that environment.
Stay safe people x

Closing ATM’s?! Unless I’m missing something...that makes no sense. They might as well close gas stations too. If people can’t use something to cover their hand (I use a wipe or tissue) and then sanitizer afterwards, that’s their own fault. Crazy.

Yeah heard it from a friend who works in a large supermarket. They’ve been told that part of what they’ve been advised is that to stop the spread of infection they may close the ATMs. I’m waiting on it being confirmed. Due to the job I do we hear a lot of supposition so waiting to hear in the next couple of days if it’s true. Yeah I see what you mean about gas stations. Exactly about being careful. It’s hysteria over here.

Possibilty/probably closing bars/restaurants...in addition to already the suspension of all major professional and college sports as well as the closing of all schools.

The Department of Education finally closed down all of the schools in my state until April 6th. They said they'll extend that time if need be.

In the UK they’re holding off on school closures, as parents are still going to work and therefore having to ask grandparents (most vulnerable) to watch their children.

Some of my work colleagues up here in Scotland got messages from the schools their kids are at to suggest they may be closed soon possibly before the end of the week.

Yeah, it seems to be on an individual basis at the moment. At the schools discretion, as opposed to a government decision.

All nonessential businesses are closing where I live (Pennsylvania) after midnight tonight as per the local governments orders. This on top of all schools already being closed, most people working from home or just not at all, food stores being low in stock of not only basic essentials, but actual food now too.
This is only like 2 weeks in, I can't even imagine how much worse this will get in a month...2 months or more from now.
It's terrifying, like something out of a movie, but it's real life.
