Every time I log in and log out (and every time I refresh my browser it logs in or out) I lose all my messages. Do they just disappear once you log out?
Are you on about in Chat or are you on about PM's? In chat yes they will go. Otherwise its holding open data that might never be used again. Chat is session based, so logging out closes all aspects of that session. Same when you refresh, it creates a new session.
