With everything that has went on over the last 18 months worldwide affecting million of people and killing hundreds of thousands and still rising.

Whats your opinion on the olympic games going ahead, should they shouldnt they, the people of there own country dont want them and the major sponsor toyota withdraws.

Just wondered all you lovely peoples thoughts

Right before the games Asahi, the top news outlet in Japan, had a poll about if the games should continue. 30 percent of the locals said no they should postpone again, especially with Tokyo in their fourth state of emergency. Now you have athletes who either: couldn't go to the Olympics after winning the qualifiers due to a positive covid test. Having a positive covid test during the games. Or withdrawing due to mental health issues.

However this Olympics have been a first for many countries: Philippines and Bermuda were two countries to win the gold for the first time. Japan skateboarder Nishiya Momiji became the youngest person at the Olympics to win the gold at age 13.

Whether or not the Olympics should have postponed or not, the winter Olympics will be held in just seven months in Beijing. Only time will tell if things will be "back to normal" in just seven months

To postpone it for another year would have messed around with the soccer world championship which created chaos with soccer leagues around the world even before covid as it will be held in November and December because host is Katar

Yes and September is qualifiers

I guess they decided to go ahead with it to get it done and over with. It's already been a financial nightmare for Japan. The IOC didn't care because they sold the TV rights already 3 years ago for 6or 8 billion . And Olympics are important for the athletes and their clubs because their results decide what sports get funds and who not. Hockey or fencing has not money like a NFL or Premier League.

Looking at how much power they have and how they do business, the UEFA and the IOC are the Nesttle and the Coca-Cola of the sportworld

And look at the backlash the IOC has gotten for fining the Norwegian beach volleyball team for wearing shorts

When a competitor has to self finance her journey to compete for her country at the Olympics then wins Gold, surely there is something fundamentally wrong with the selection process !!!!

I really wouldn't say there is something wrong with the process. And Bethany Shriever isn't the only one. The national country chooses who to allow to go. Great Britian stated that only they would pay for male riders for the 2020 games. Just like Georgia failed to send finalised paperwork for their mixed doubles tennis players. The problem herein lies with the county and not the IOC

I never said the fault was with the IOC, a BBC news report claimed the major part of funding went on the rowing squads, and in a sport that they have dominated for quite a long time, their medal haul did NOT justify the money !!!!

On another note: It was brilliant watching golfers playing for nothing more than National pride, it improved the viewing immensely.

Best quote of the games so far:
"Alex Yee is not even in the same camera shot, he's in a different suburb"
