    the universe is a great big monster...
    devouring our energies when we die
    and growing itself
    and raising new flock
    to harness energy again

    The universe does not raise a flock. That would give it a sentince that has never been proved.

    The Universe also cares little for the idea of religion and it shouldn't be counted upon to agree as well. It copes pretty well without the need for faith.

    Sounds like you're describing the primordial god Chaos, and all his other incarnations. It's basically the personification of a man asking "why?" to the heavens and only hearing back cold indifferent winds. It's anti-life, it's meaningless and if not balanced with meaning and Order, it will consume you.
