So, you might have noticed we have forums now. We've been getting things set up, ironing things out, for the last few days, and decided to create an official staff-only announcements forum, and here it is. All can read and reply, but new threads can only be created in this space by administrators.

    Why did we add forums?

Some people have asked what this thing is all about. Here's the story: 123FlashChat, the applet that FCN currently uses for chat, is now defunct. This means that we no longer receive support from the people that made it. That means that we'll have to undertake any required maintenance, patching, fixing security vulnerabilities, etc, on our own. The 123FlashChat software just isn't worth that kind of effort, so we decided to make our own. It is compatible with pretty much every platform, not flash-based, is fast and responsive, and won't bog down whatever device it is running on. Plus, it'll still have webcam and microphone support, font color customization, and most other things you're accustomed to.

What does that have to do with forums?

Huh? Who said anything ab--oh. Right. So, the chat we have created, while functional, is not quite ready to be deployed on FCN. We wanted forums anyway; who doesn't like forums? But the forums serve another purpose as well: They let us get everyone set up with usernames that will be compatible with the new chat, which, when the new chat goes live, will automatically work, with no further effort required on your parts.

    The thing is...

If you are a current FCN user, and you have not yet done so, you must register here on the forums. As long as your original username doesn't have any spaces or special characters, you can use the exact same username here on the forums. If your original chat username does have spaces or special characters, you will have to register a different username. For example, if you are ~username person~, you will need to be username_person, or usernameperson, or NicknamePerson if you feel like changing it entirely -- it's up to you.

If you do not create an account on the forums by the time the new chat goes live, your chat username will just be gone. We won't be able to recover any information about it. It's best to get this over with quickly!

    Instructions for those just beginning:

If you've already got your new username, or signed up on the forums with your original chat username, you don't have to worry about this.

    • At the top-right of the window you are looking at right now, if you are just starting out, there will be a link that says "Log in or Sign up." Click it.
    • Type your original username into the first box. (If you attempt to sign up with a username that is invalid -- contains spaces or special characters -- you will be notified and will have to change it before you can proceed. You can use this time to figure out which elements you have to remove from your original username to make it valid.)
    • Select "no, create an account now."
    • Click "Sign up."
    • This will take you to a new page where you must provide a valid email address, a secure password that you can remember, your gender (optionally), your date of birth, and a reCAPTCHA verification.
    • Click the checkbox next to "I agree to the terms and rules," then click "Sign up."
    • You will receive an email shortly after this with an activation link for your account. This email may be in your spam folder, so be sure to check there. You may also have to wait anywhere up to an hour for it to arrive.
      • Our mail servers work fine. If you are not receiving the message, it is your email provider handling things incorrectly. Yes, Google et al are not infallible. You heard it here first. You can try another provider -- Yahoo, AOL, even the email you get from your Internet Service Provider -- but we can't guarantee any of them will work. Throwaway email providers may not be accepted, and it is best that you use a real email address anyway, in order to preserve the ability to access your FCN account in the future if you should forget your password. We will not perform any special recovery services for people who have lost access to the email account they used to register at FCN.
      • We will not bypass email verification for you.
      • We cannot help you if you are not receiving the email because, as explained already, that is either your email provider's fault, or you typed your email address wrong on signup.
    • The verification link in the email will take you to a forum page, which has a link up at the top in the dark blue bar that will take you to the chat. Click "Chat" in the dark blue bar up top.
    • Once the chat loads, you will need to log in with your new username and password.
      • Even if your username did not change, ie if it was already valid (did not contain spaces or special characters and fit within the required length), the proper password to log in to the chat applet itself will be the password that you used to register on the forums.
      • In order to see the "log in" option in the menu, you may have to use the "log OUT" option first to end the old session. Any further "i dont see a log in i only have log out" posts will be met with derisive laughter and mockery.
    • Share a link to this thread with anyone in the chat who is confused.

    In The Future

Watch this forum for future updates. We hope to have a sneak peek for you soon, to show you what the new chat will be like.
