What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?

Well, you have to know these things when you're a king, you know.

European swallow:

Mass: 20g
Wing beat frequency: 15Hz (so in fact not 43Hz)
Highest observed velocity: 13-14m/s
Cruising velocity: 11m/s​

You do realize two swallows could carry a coconut if they tied it to strings and each took one...

 

Are we talking average speed over a certain distance, or top speed? With wind assistance? Age of bird? Is it a smoker? Malting season?

 

It depends..there are so many variables such as wind speed and direction.. air temperature and humidity altitude..... to say any certain speed would be a calculated guess at best
