Merlot is a variety of red grape and used to make red wine. Traditionally reds are not chilled and the old school wine drinkers will scoff at the idea. but at the end of the day it is a drink and the best idea is to do what makes the best drink for the person drinking it. the drawback with chilling is it subdues all the aromas and flavours.

Hypothetically, could someone taste rat poison in a merlot?

Are you not supposed to chill a merlot? Is that a wine?

You can drink any wine any way you like. "Wine etiquette" is for nonsensical, pretentious snobs who overpaid for wine. Chilled wine will mute harsher compounds and warmer wine will make acidic notes more prominent. Younger wines can be harsher. You can add water to your wine to dilute any harshness.

After you experiment and find what you like, be it reds with added water and ice cubes, maybe added grape or pomegranate juice, maybe whites with water or added apple juice, and you can articulate those preferences, you'll seem like an expert to most people.

Hypothetically, could someone taste rat poison in a merlot?

I would assume so.......not that I have tasted rat poison lately...... It would probably depend on the amount of rat poison......

The only important with with wine is how you store it, solely to prevent spoilage, because wine continues to age in the bottle.

Wine's value ultimately depends on your palate.
