That's so cool you got to see them. I've seen them lots but I'm a lot further north lol. But it's cloudy right now so nothing fur me to look at! Also I've never seen them be red like that😮

I'm glad to have finally seen them too. I've always wanted to see them lol. They appear red due to
strong geomagnetic storms push the aurora further south than usual, and the red color is created by excited oxygen atoms reacting at very high altitudes (above 150 miles). At these high altitudes, the solar particles have less energy but cause a red glow that can be seen from lower latitudes like Illinois during intense solar activity. You can thank Google lol
