It can occasionally cause issues with publishers, US market vs World market.. etc
Now this post is full of red underlines as I am typing it indicating the site's US spell checker is not a happy camper with me corrupting what it thinks is how the word should be spelt.

Yes that is partly to blame as far as spelling. But how we speak it has more to do with the distance between the Colonies and the Crown. As the English language changed and evolved for what is now the U.K and Commonwealth it didn't for us. We never got the memo.
