  • I spend most of my time debating students, taking apart their arguments, pointing out sloppy thinking, and making people confront their own contradictions. It’s part of my job as a professor of gender studies, but it’s also something I rather enjoy.

And I’m very good at making comfort go away. I rather enjoy making someone’s smug certainty crack, making them confront their own thinking, or making them retreat into cheap deflection. Watching someone go from confident to irritated to defensive is a rather fascinating thing.

What I find most interesting is how predictable they are. The same arguments, the same emotional reactions, the same assumptions dressed up as logic.

They come in convinced they’re challenging me, when really they’re reenacting patterns I’ve dismantled hundreds of times before. And yet, they keep trying. They always keep trying. Maybe because part of them hopes this time will be different. It never is.
