I would definitely call myself a kinkster as opposed to a fetishist. I think that's probably true of most here, just that we've come to use the terms interchangeably despite there being a significant difference. This article gives a succinct look at the difference:

Now on a personal level I'm extremely versatile. I know it is a strong statement but really within the context of consenting adults I can go with the flow almost anywhere. Though like anyone I do have my hard limits, so long as an act stays within those limits I won't knock it till I have tried it (usually twice to make sure unless the first time is conclusively bad for me).

That all being said for me sex is about communication, mutual respect and being relaxed and comfortable. If those elements are there be it vanilla or kinky the sex will be fun in my opinion. I see sex in terms of fun/boring rather than good or bad, as skill is driven by experience (not discrediting any native talent for aspects of play). So you can have "bad" sex that is fun and "good" sex that is boring.

What kinks I enjoy really depend on the person I am with and even if a relationship is completely vanilla I can be happy with that. The deal breaker for me is if I am open and honest about the kinks I am into and the person whom I'm with is judgemental about it and disrespectful. I'm perfectly cool with it if they are to say it isn't for me or I'm not comfortable trying/doing that. For me being able to have that kind of openness is really important.

Also a strange point to mention is just because I'm have enjoyed a kink with one person doesn't necessarily mean I will enjoy it with another or even want to try it with them. Things for me are always very changeable and fluid. Sometimes fantasy and the mind can be the perfect place for indulging a kink.

Apologies this might get wordy and not necessarily constructed well.

I don't think there is a vanilla Vs kinky to be had. Yes the internet has aided the proliferation and acceptance of kink/fetish and that has had positive and negative facets to it. I think the most important things are knowing your mind and body, being comfortable in your mind and skin (or at least knowing when to leave your hangups at the door), knowing what you enjoy, being able to communicate what you enjoy, being able to communicate what you don't like and being able to say no and also being able to unequivocally accept a no without the need to underhandedly persist in trying to pester or change someone.

Moreover when it comes to kink/fetish taking the time to understand what you like and being able to explain that in a way that is easily relatable. You can't necessarily open up to a lover or partner and expect them to understand off the bat why you find that act a turn on, let alone expect them to immediately engage in it.

That's the problem with watching pornography and not having the experience or knowledge to understand that what you are watching is the sexual equivalent of the WWE. Yes sometimes the heat of the moment might take us unexpectedly into acts we might not have envisaged ourselves doing but that is very rare. But in essence we are meant to be being of comprehension and understanding.

If I had to boil it down to a simple nutshell it's all about emotional intelligence and developing that is rewarding in all aspects of our lives including sex. For me and I'm sure many a partner or lover having high emotional intelligence is an extremely attractive trait.
