So it turns out if you have battery saving mode on on your phone (doesn't seem to matter if it's iPhone or Android) it will regularly disconnect you from the chat. Especially if you're uploading images. I think this is because the operations of the phone prioritise the app that the user is using at the time. It seems to have helped me and others by turning it off.
