Try logging out of forum profile, closing the browser, then logging in again. If that doesn't work, try clearing cookies.

A temporary resolution may be to continuously press the "Log in" button after receiving the initial "Unable to authenticate" message, and you may find that after several attempts, you gain access to chat.

I tried logging in to chat about an hour or so ago and got the same error msg. i even updated my browser and the repeated clicking of the log in button while the error msg was showing and after 5 - 6 tries, i gave up.
