For the black and whites i use just the standard pencil for a brush, for color ones the brushes vary.
for B&W like you quoted, I find an image ( i gots lots of them
) sketch a basic outline and just start filling in with hard lines and overbearing shadows. so they are not 100% from my mind, they are photos that i sketch how i see them I guess
