This one time some years ago, these people had three Christmas cactus stumps in a pot with like 4 - 7 segments each and it's always been like that for them.
Sort of like this:
I offered to revive it and they agreed. First thing I did was transplanted them into a larger pot, replaced all the soil and fertilized it—instructed them to water and fertilize every few weeks or so. By the end of the year, it looked more like this:
