Be it books, movies, games, TV series what ever it may be, what is some of your favourites and why?

I mean the obvious one would be star wars, but two that i really enjoy that i don't feel get enough love would be

Firefly: really enjoyed this. Was differnt. A space western , was well cast and most of the people on the ship were likeable with their own strengths they offered. Was a shame we only got one series and then it was canceled. But at least we got the film Serenity, which I really enjoyed too.

Farscape. I absolutely adore this show so much. So much fun. I love the way this one isnt taken quite so seriously. Watched it a lot growing up

The writing on Firefly/Serenity is some top-shelf stuff, agreed. The limited number of episodes makes it all the more special.

For me, the first thing that comes to mind are Iain M. Banks' Culture novels.

Set in a utopian "post-scarcity" universe with artificial super intelligences (Minds), each book follows a (human) agent of the Culture interacting with or influencing other civilizations. Kind of like Star Trek on steroids, without the Prime Directive, and way more engaging (for me, at least). Every book can stand on its own, and each contains loads of interesting ideas/worlds.

All sorts of sci fi gets my neurons activating honestly.

Warhammer 30k and 40k usually drags me into stuff, or I become an arse about how it was better in the past. But there is lots of cool concepts and ideas to delve into, roleplay set within the setting from basic humans to genetically engineered super warriors and then even to a wide variety of Xenos.

Dr Who is another one that just radiates so much joy and all sorts of fun possibilities with cool monsters. Always crave more Cybermen personal. And I'd likely offend people by telling them that the Tenth Doctor isn't in my top five.

Fallout I'm a huge fanatic for, usually dabble with fan fiction for it these days with how the lore has been treated for the last decade or so. But that's fine since Old World Blues mod has loads of cool fanfiction set all across America and their occupied territory of Canada from Washington to Chicago. Also has Mexican lore too with places like the Rio Republic.

G1 transformers also holds a special place in my heart, was always fun watching the 1986 movie when younger.

No interest in ERPing any of them since that's not really what draws me into them. Even if elements of that is involved in there, it's not something that makes me go wow this setting is cool.

Seconded for Firefly pretty much a perfect show up to cancellation.

Book wise it's not a a series but I'd recommend Artemis by Andy Weir, his book The Martian is probably his most famous because of the movie, great book and movie by the way.

Anyway Artemis is about a smuggler on the only colony on the moon and she gets caught up in a grand conspiracy. Its very well written and enormous fun.

Its funny I do like alot of sci-fi but now thinking of it for this thread alot of it isn't based in space

Ah the martian was such a good book. The movie was a tiny bit disappointing but still good!

Ready Player one was an amazing book too. The movie, again, was 💩 in comparison

I also forgot gundam. Mainly just UC0079.

It's a fun setting where Humanity has setup colonies in space but Earth Federation is pretty corrupt extorting the colonies going into a devastating war.

The follow up stuff has people swapping sides, good guys turning bad and a lot of the mechs get more extreme.

Personally I just love Zakus and the Gouf.

Never seen Cowboy Bebop but heard good things about it.

Honestly never watched much anime, maybe four or so series.

Gundam, girls Und Panzer, sword art online and Hellsing Ultimate.

Usually enjoy Sci Fi I can get into playing or influencing.

But yes live action adaptations are usually off beat or completely different to the original. Jin Roh is cool but that's not really Sci Fi.

Tell you another good Sci Fi setting which is great, Mass Effect.

Not just the games, but the whole setting around it, be it before Humanity arrives on the scene or all the way back to the foundation of the Council, Rachni Wars, Krogan Rebellions and a bunch more events.

And then Battletech is a cool one with it mainly being mechs are cool let's fight, but the setting is vast with multiple eras to enjoy going from the Star League's fall to the splitting of the Star League Defence Force from the Great Houses into unknown space and then into the Clan Invasions.

Lots of politics, lots of mechs and overall a fun universe.

Agree with both Firefly and Cowboy Bebop.

On the reading side, my two favorites are the Republic of Cinnabar Navy (RCN) series by David Drake for historical models adapted to a Napoleonic-flavored sci-fi setting, and the old Retief stories by Keith Laumer for a dose of diplomatic sarcasm and shenanigans.

Ayyy, Farscape was weird but cool, didn't see all of it but I enjoyed it.
I've also loved stuff like Babylon 5 cause of the big plot and ships and stuff.

I loved watching The Expanse on Amazon. I picked up the books recently and ripped through the first two pretty quickly (for me anyway). The books were even more heart pounding and intense, and of course detailed. I really liked the concept of humans living in different parts of the solar system and how it physically affected them long term.

so many sci-fi movies and TV shows ive watched. So far all of them you mentioned are definalty bangers. My fav is Firefly 100%. Farscape is also excellent and different. Red dwarf is quirky. Babylon 5 is definitely one with good story. All the startreks and starwars of course.

Ever herd of Andromeda with Kevin Sorbo? Its a good one if you liked Hurculies and Xena.

My favorite movie would have to be the Starship Troopers. The sequels were alright.

Grew up with Doctor Who so have a big soft spot for it even though the last few seasons have been very hit and miss.

Really enjoyed Lost In Space (the Netflix series) and Picard and Star Trek Discovery
