You dont need to be "good" at. All you need is to prepare and keep supplementing your soil with organic matter, grow plants at appropriate spacing, give them some sort of physical support if necessary, prune them and supply consistent, adequate water. Once set up, all you need is to spend 10-15 minutes every other day. Maybe more on the weekends while weeding or tidying up.

Water delivery on a timer is very helpful. I couldn't do without it. It doesn't have to be fancy either.

Very good advice but I rent in a housing park on a beach.
The ground here is worthless and tampering with it is a fine. A water system goes against HOA regulations as well.

I have to do everything in containers with a watering can.

Still, I try. Just had a very nice sweet pepper haul this morning
 
Only a few tomatoes and peppers so far, no cucumbers or carrots yet. 5 dozen sweet corn and about 2 dozen zucchini so far.
