Its not a social medium like a chat room. Its a forum for debates and discussions, not conversations. People usually log in, read the threads, respond to those of interest then return tomorrow and do it all again. Bear in mind, its a global audience too. People can only come on-line when they are free from daily commitments and that varies across the globe according to time zones.

A lot depends on a persons circumstances. For example, I'm sitting at the computer all day writing. I have chat open because if forces me to take a break when a PM goes 'Ding' otherwise, I'd loose all track of time. I'm logged into the forum at the same time for the same reason except that I pop in to read the threads when I'm thinking about what to write next. I find it clears the head and lets fresh ideas germinate.
