static images aren't really an issue, but webp would be very useful for animated images. would also help the site owners to reduce bandwidth costs. the upload limit is 8MB fyi
You gotta take into account compatibility with everything out there and a huge task of revamping all sorts of software for image processing, detecting what's using what do the right files could be served, etc...
Give it 5-10 years and maybe everything will have the ability to deal with webp files.
There are free online converters that can turn an webp file into a gif one. I use them all the time and it doesn't take more than 5-10 seconds per file.

yeah, but then you have transcode artifacts and a much worse quality gif as a result. also, it's much harder to achieve a <8mb file size with GIF, so you have to further compromise the quality / size of the image
