They look like Skyflowers Duranta, they are sort of an invasive species Down Under. They popularly used as hedge bush, and down on branches usually have thorns.

Its definitely part of a LARGE hedge that's taller than me and I'll check below for thorns next time and report back ... what a magical sounding name - never heard if them and curious ... how do you know this?
