Have you thought about a 3inch mulch of cedar shreeds.

It will limit water loss by evaporation and slow down the birds

That's the plan, but currently I'm assisting someone else with their garden, so it seems I can barely can find time for mine. lol The other garden will receive mulch first. (It's easier to conduct trial and error experiments there, simply due to the larger area)
