A baby bird has been chilling in my garden for a few days, but seems to be alone. Usually I see Mother/an nest about somewhere.
This bird spends most of its time sat on the grass, pecking for food, or hiding under bushes. It can fly, but doesn’t go very high or far. It’s difficult to get a decent photo, as I can’t get anywhere near without scaring it (and too faffy to get my dslr).

I thought it was a baby starling, but it’s too fluffy and lots of pale patches. Some research suggests it might be a juvenile cuckoo.
As a bird watcher, I'd say the beak seems to be too long for a cuckoo, also feather colour and spotting suggests your earlier thought of a starling may be more accurate.

Hm. I’d like to get closer. Maybe I will get the dslr out.
I’ve just been researching cuckoos anyway and it’s an interesting read. The raising of them would sort of make sense as to why this bird is completely alone.
You’re right about the beak length though, also cuckoos look to have quite long tails.

“Cuckoos are masters of deception. When it comes to raising their young, these birds don’t need to build a nest, protect their eggs or feed their offspring. Instead, female cuckoos pass these roles onto unsuspecting victims.
Cuckoos are brood parasites, meaning they don’t raise their own young. They lay their eggs in the nests of other bird species, according to the Max Planck Society in Germany, tricking other birds into thinking the cuckoo eggs are theirs.”

Is that a normal price there? Or only since the downturn?

I was shopping at a family-run farm shop, so prices are higher as it’s all local/homemade/homegrown produce.
Below is an example price of a gingerbread biscuit from a store…
