On May 1st 1886 thousands of U.S workers walked off their jobs to demand an 8 hr work day . Their bosses as well as allies in the White House and Congress worked to violently crush the movement. Hundreds of workers and their families were beaten and murdered by police, soldiers, and hired thugs . In 1890 May day began to be commerated . It is now known as International Workers Day .
