1728 The birthday of Captain James Cook, English naval officer and one of the greatest navigators in history. His voyages in the Endeavour led to the European discovery of Australia, New Zealand and the Hawaiian Islands. Thanks to Cook’s understanding of diet, no member of the crew ever died of scurvy, the great killer on other voyages. In his youth he was apprenticed to a ship owner in Whitby.
 
1914 Birth of Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. He had a long affinity with Laugharne, spending the last four years of his life in the Boathouse.

1919 US Congress Passes the Volstead Act
The act enumerated ways to enforce Prohibition. Prohibition was put in place in the country by the 18th Amendment to the Constitution. The amendment made it illegal to produce, sell, or transport alcohol in the US except for medical or religious purposes. The act was named after Andrew Volstead, the Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee who was one of the sponsors of the bill. Prohibition ended with the ratification of the 21st Amendment in December 1933.
 
1983: Reagan defends Granada invasion
US El Comandante Ronald Reagan defended his decision to send a 2 000-strong force of Marines and Army Rangers into the Caribbean island of Grenada. The invasion, he said, had saved the country from becoming a ‘Soviet-Cuban colony’. The seven-nation expeditionary force was finally in control.

One of the biggest mistakes in US political history, imo. Did nothing but create one of the biggest crime waves ever.

Yeah, for all the do-gooders. Of course, hindsight is 20/20, isn't it. Have you watched Ken Burns documentary on it? Some interesting quotes and thoughts. One clergyman was quoted as saying something to the effect of, "If you want to make a man want to drink, make it illegal for him to do so."

I haven't no, might be something to try and catch just because I like history.
 
1970 - Jim Morrison was sentenced to 6 months in jail and fined $500 for exposing himself in Miami. He was also sentenced to 60 days of hard labor for profanity.

1945 - The U.S. government announced the end of shoe rationing.
