"Today was a Difficult Day," said Pooh.

There was a pause.

"Do you want to talk about it?" asked Piglet.

"No," said Pooh after a bit. "No, I don't think I do."

"That's okay," said Piglet, and he came and sat beside his friend.

"What are you doing?" asked Pooh.

"Nothing, really," said Piglet. "Only, I know what Difficult Days are like. I quite often don't feel like talking about it on my Difficult Days either.

"But goodness," continued Piglet, "Difficult Days are so much easier when you know you've got someone there for you. And I'll always be here for you, Pooh."

And as Pooh sat there, working through in his head his Difficult Day, while the solid, reliable Piglet sat next to him quietly, swinging his little legs…he thought that his best friend had never been more right."

I used to think that if someone was sad or upset that I shouldn't be happy around them. I was codependent and didn't want to offend them or make them upset with me. But I'm learning that being positive can have a tremendous influence on others. I am not just silly, I am intentional about being fully present in conversations I have at work and being a good listener. I can be sympathetic and still maintain my outlook on life. I am hoping to teach all the young people I work with how important empathy is, even if we don't feel like someone deserves it. Our store manager is a difficult person and she just lost a family member. It's been quite traumatic and she's missed a few weeks of work. So we got a card and everyone is signing it I really hope it'll be a learning experience for these kids (most there are 18-22 so yeah, they're kids too me :D)
