I watch others carry losses,
not loosening their grip,
names spoken softly,
and chairs left empty,
days endured instead of lived.
And though my body aches,
my heart bruised by its own weight,
I see more clearly now,
I am still the lucky one,
despite the pain I carry.
For I have hands that reach for me,
voices answer when I call,
a place to rest and reason to rise.
Perhaps not whole, but safe.
I am not strong, but not alone.
No shadows around me final,
no breath counted as the last.
So I feel grateful even through this pain,
for what remains, and who.
Because this moment eventhough hard,
could have been even worse.
I will cherish more that which I have,
and even what I've lost.
For the future is uncertain,
today the only promise.
