This will be the second time that Cortina has hosted the Olympics, the first being Cortina d'Ampezzo in 1956. It's the third time that Italy has hosted the Winter Olympics (2006 Turin) and the fourth time for any Olympics (1960 Rome)

The first Winter Olympics in 1924 in Chamonix, France, was not considered the Olympics at the time. It was simply a winter sports festival with a French name that escapes me atm. Once the Winter Olympics were truly established with the St. Moritz games in 1928, the 1924 event was retroactively deemed the first Winter Olympics!
