That's media exaggeration. I've never in my life seen anyone brandishing a weapon and I live in "Chiraq." The only place you'd have to worry about and hear such things is small bad areas of major cities, the ghetto—think bad areas of Liverpool, Cleveland, Inner-city London boroughs like Westminster and Camden.
I don't even know what that means. It's not a thing. There's literally parts of towns known to be LGBT communities. The entire San Francisco is known to be an LGBT town.
