The rubber ones are typically less messy because you can bite down on them more. The rigid ones specifically help produce more saliva because you can't move your jaw at all. Mess is fun.

My exp is opposite. Breathing through the holes drys my mouth so no drippings. But in do enjoy the rubber to bite down during pleasure/pain inflicting.
