I keep waking up in the middle of the night. Last night was awful, felt like a sense of dread, but I don’t remember what I was dreaming about.
If you have a smart watch, wear it to bed.
Look at the stage of sleep cycle, heart rate, breathing and maybe oxygen level (not very reliable). This will point you in the right direction and maybe help you adjust your pre-sleep routines, possibly make lifestyle adjustments.

High or low blood sugar will wake you up with high HR.
Sleep apnea will wake you up with high HR.
Etc...
