I’ve only seen the first two episodes
Was going to say Lost did a similar thing.
Most of the last season of Lost was unnecessary imo.
It got Lost 
Season 1: awesome
Season 2: pretty good
A good chunk of Season 3: admittedly rough and treading water
End of Season 3 through Season 6: eeeeee

It was brilliant for the first four seasons then went proper wonky. That's about it for my knowledge of TV stuff tbh.
I loved the last 3 seasons. Thought the last season was a nice wrap up, done in a way that kept you guessing. Last shot makes me cry
Damon Lindelof redeemed himself with The Leftovers and Watchmen (tv show not movie) that both end well

It really was, blew away my expectations
I just seem to remember the last season being all "oh btw there's ANOTHER part of the island with OTHER people you haven't met yet but they'll all be dead soon so who cares". Then stuff happened.
