I once took my 10 year old daughter to a daddy daughter dance at her school and the DJ didnt show up. There was a gymnasium full of sad little girls. This was before smart phones. It just so happened I had an electric piano and some amps in the back of my truck from a gig the night before. In 20 minutes I had a makeshift PA set up and was singing and playing songs like Shout, Locomotion, Lion sleeps tonite...etc. The party was a success.

I couldnt understand why my little girl was not happy until later on in the night and it hit me...She wanted to dance with her daddy and couldnt. I was more focused on being "the entertainer" than her dad. I still get choked up thinking about it. I was a terrible dad not just this night either...

Honestly, I'm the same way. I know you don't know me, but it's worth it to me to try. I'll help people in any way I can, but when it comes down to a situation where trust is involved, there are only a small handful of people I trust! But, you can't block everyone out because of it. Try to remind yourself, trust must be earned, it's not a given. So if you're in a position where you start to trust someone, ask yourself what they've done to earn that trust. And if they say something, be honest..."It's nothing you did, it's what others have done, and I'm not ready for it to happen again, I apologize!" 9 times out of 10, a trustworthy person will accept it, no questions asked, and everything will continue just as before. If they become offended, or try to argue, or start acting differently, it's because they can't accept that you might be able to see past the outer layer.
 
I was in the army cadets when I was at school. (Youth organisation for 14-18 year olds).
 
On elementary school they kept me 1 year longer because I still was too playful.
