Ever wanted to start a simple garden, but didn't know where to start? Anybody can do this:
Very Minimal maintenance garden:
Anti-pest plants; Interplant these everywhere:
Basil (variety if you like)
Dill (Fernleaf and Mammoth)
Oregano
Rosemary
Chives
Onions / bunching onions
Marigolds (French)
Nasturtiums (some pests prefer these over some vegetables)
For salads and stuff (shady areas):
Spinach
Romaine lettuces
Swiss Chards
Tomatoes:
ONLY DETERMINATE KINDS, so you'll need only a stake for each plant and no pruning. They need less space than indeterminate.
Leave open space for few more plants four weeks later (use that space for radishes).
Cucumbers:
ONLY Beit Alpha OR Chinese Jade cucumbers. These don't need pollination, most/almost all flowers are female, very prolific, hardy and disease resistant.
Peppers:
Only one kind of common bell peppers, only one kind of large common Italian peppers.
Maybe a hot pepper.
Other stuff:
Radishes, celery, maybe turnips, sugar snap peas,
All of the above selections need almost no upkeep. Just water it well every two or three days.
Prepare all soil by:
Lightly sprinkling basic, all-purpose, balanced fertilizer.
Spread 1" of composted manure or mushroom compost, or mix of both
Lightly sprinkled Bloodmeal (nitro for vegetation).
Lightly sprinkles Bonemeal (calcium for fruiting).
Add your own compost if it's ready.
Mix it all up to depth of 4" or so.
You'll have to add phosphorus-rich fertilizer once you see fruit flowers forming.
