Nobody's required to keep balance. Debit is equal to cash. Meanwhile, credit card issuers just throw money at you for simply using their cards. They make money on network transaction fees. Whether you pay cash or credit, businesses have that cost built into their pricing. Might as well get your money back via reward pints, cash back, discounts, offers, etc. you're overpaying with cash. You could have your cash sitting in a 5% yielding acct, pay by credit only, earn rewards/cash back/whatever AND earn % on your idle cash. Game it. They make money on transaction fees, you get cash back. It's a no-brainer.
