I have mates from NZ that told me their parents were doing it tough and they had no hot water when they were kids. So they got an old bath tub and put it outside in their backyard, put a plank of wood inside it to sit on so they didn't burn their feet because yep, they made a fire underneath the tub to warm the water!!
