What makes you happy

I always put family first even when I'm away my wife can call me and I am there for them. I've read a bed time story for my daughter while up a control mast on a aircraft carrier in the middle of the atlantic, even stopped meetings to say good night. It doesn't take much and pays dividends at work. I gave a highly paid job up as they were worried that I was putting myself in danger too often with the old firm, I'm happier than ever and get to see my girls so much more it was worth it. Yes I do long hours still but I'm still at home more than ever.

When a good plan comes together, perhaps

Not sure about happy - for me, happiness is more an external thing. If there was world peace, no more wars and famine, no more child and elder abuse, no more rape and FGM, no hatred based on Race, Creed, Religion etc. then I would definitely be happy.

Until then, I am more than content with what I have - my own humble abode, my health, the fact that I have two arms and two legs and am not wheelchair-bound, blind, deaf etc. I learnt long ago to appreciate the small privileges that I have and to not take anything for granted.

This. All of this. Respect, bro. RESPECT.

Re-read this. Kudos on knowing your priorities. Being a parent is the most important task one will ever have the privilege and responsibility to handle. Children need both their parents, as much as is possible. It's lovely reading how you set the rules in your workplace for prioritising your family. It makes a difference to other parents as well, who may not have had that realization yet.
