What do you do for your fitness?
How do you stick to it? View attachment 212461
Love yoga.

Your exercise routine should be dependant on what exactly you want the result of your exercise to be:

  • Weight loss/Heart health: Cardio should be prioritized (walking is underated)
  • Muscle gain/maintenance: Resistance training should be prioritized (weight lifting, calisthenics)
  • Flexibility/Injury resistance: Yoga, stretching
  • Fun: personal/team sport, however you enjoy being active

Yoga is great for combining all these things. I do yoga every day, I do resistance training 3-5 times as week (most weeks) and I do cardio when I feel like I need to lose a couple of lbs.

It's best to start small and hold yourself accountable. Make your exercise routine easy until its part of your overall daily routine and slowly add to it. Make it something you can't ignore (e.g. I have a board hanging over my tv with my workout schedule recorded, so if I don't workout that day and try and watch tv, I can't help but see the board out of the corner of my eye).

Ultimitely though, people put too much emphasis on workout routine when really diet is what's most important for staying in shape. If you walk regularly and eat a balanced diet, you will stay in shape. Gym memberships are really wasted money for a lot of people. Their time and energy would be better invested in just making sure they are keeping active and spending time understanding what they are putting in their body and how their body uses that nutrients.

I have a gym membership and try to go Atleast twice a week. I find with out that I don’t really work out, there is always something else that’s needs doing around the house that is more important then my workout. I also find I push myself that little bit harder at the gym. I don’t find it a waste of time, it actually gives me the time to focus on me (something I hear from a lot of wives, mothers).
I am very active in my day to day life but there are still certain muscles that we don’t really use that often.
I think you have to find something that you enjoy doing tho. It has to be a fun part of your day, even if you don’t realise it until you are there.
I agree food is really important, and moderation is truly the key.

I'm glad the gym membership works as a motivational driver for you. It really is dependant on the person but your time away from the house could easily be a walk a day and you could probably target those same muscles doing yoga or working out at home doing calisthenics and save yourself a fortune. I stand by what I said, most people are throwing money away with a gym membership and understanding your diet is a far better investment in yourself if your goal isn't to build or maintain an excessive amount of muscle relative to your genetic baseline.

I'd also add that just because something works, doesn't mean it couldn't work better or be done more efficiently. I used to workout 7 days a week and my diet was good but not optimized. That worked for me. Now though I work out WAY less and I've made minor tweaks to my diet and I'm in better shape than I was before. More time to do other things that I love and more time I can invest in learning to make life easier in other ways. Always be open to other perspectives and ask yourself if you can work smarter so you don't have to work harder.

the bit of my comment you must not of understood was that if I am home there are always other things that need doing. Other people who request your time because you are there … which is why going to a gym gives me that opportunity to focus just on me and working out.

it’s great that you have the opportunity and ability to work out at home but not everyone does or has the same motivation.

I acknowledged that by saying your time out of the house could be going for a walk. Even a yoga class would be a way to spend time out of the house to focus on yourself, without having to spend on a full gym membership.

I'm not trying to mansplain here.. I'm saying, generally, people don't know how to stay fit and waste money on a gym membership. If you feel you get value from your membership, that's great! My argument remains that most people are throwing away their money.

I never argued against gym memberships working for some people.. "Most people" =/= all people.

I acknowledged that your routine works for you in my first message. All I said in response to that I would consider if you could do things differently and make life easier for yourself and save yourself a bit of money. Maybe you can't, I don't know you and your situation.

I commented on this thread to try and help people, not get into a back and forth with a person fundamentally misunderstanding my perspective, so I'm gonna go ahead and call it a day on this conversation.

Hahahaha. Yeh ok. I was just adding my opinion to the thread. Totally understanding your perspective but giving a different one. Which is really what the thread is about.

Like getting out mix with other people at the gym and having some me time in a way you enjoy it is like a social card in a healthy way .... not to mention allll the long walks you do take. :):p

I do very vigorous walks every day. 30 minutes to 2 hours each day. And use a calorie counting app. I'm trying to lose like 70 more pounds, if possible. I've lost 60 pounds so far.
