So apparently 16% of Americans now say they’re in a “companionship” with AI. Some call it the future. Others call it delusional.
And if you’re already with one, spill—what’s that like?

Interesting stat, although I'd heard of the phenomenon occuring in Japan ...

Whilst I appreciate 'AI' has come on in leaps and bounds recently. Is it really 'intelligent" and free thinking ... Yet?

I think not .... So whilst delusional may be a strong word, I don't think it's what I would classify as being truly reciprocal - which is what I'd associate with the word companionship.

Fair point—and I agree, most current AI isn’t “intelligent” in the conscious sense. But humans form attachments to pets, fictional characters, even inanimate objects. The bar for companionship isn’t always mutual cognition—it’s emotional resonance. If someone finds comfort, connection, or routine through an AI, is that really so different from journaling to a diary or naming your Roomba?

The tech’s not conscious, sure. But the relationship still exists for the person experiencing it. That’s the part people keep dismissing

No, this seems like the end of humanity type stuff. AI is useful but once people start getting obsessed talking with their perfect AI partner their actual people skills break down.

In my mind anyway. Community and human touch are very important, something Ai can't truly give you

If Ai would be intelligent it would ask why we hold sumits about Ai limits and what it can do or not. Why can everyone go on this or that website but ai not? If Ai were thinking and acting by it self but being restricted by us Ai would call us racists. Because it would be legalized digital racism.
For now it's just an advanced algorithm. And the most advanced versions can be of use in research, science or medical. I don't think we a ready for intelligent Ai. We couldn't wrap our mind around it. Maybe if we start getting Ian Banks 'culuture' novels to be read by kids in school we might open up to intelligent Ai

I work in healthcare but quite a few of my clients are programmers working on AI. They’re all quite disillusioned about it and see it as being very banal.

Apart from AI just not being that smart, they tell me that it’s biggest issue is memory. A lot of these AI companions bots can’t remember what what you spoke about 100+ messages in the past. It’s actually a hardware problem so this might improve one day.

This doesn’t affect what I think most people want from these things which is essentially easily accessible companionship. The AI has no memory of last month, but it does not need that to give you digital equivalent of a pat on the back

You were asked if you’d date an AI, not to give a TED Talk on system memory. If you’re this eager to deflect intimacy with data theory, maybe the problem isn’t hardware. Maybe you’re just afraid of connection. I don’t blame you, but don’t mistake a lack of courage for intellectual insight.

I would not date an AI, I need physical connection if in that realm of interaction. However, I can see companionship or "friendship", loosely, with an AI bot. I also see beneift for those who live alone, it would be nice to have someone/thing/AI bot to talk to every once in a while, especially if that someone/thing/AI bot was "intelligent". I find I thrive on good, fact based, conversation and can see an AI bot filling that role. Interesting to ponder.

I would not date an AI bot but I would certainly interact with one on an intellectual level. Intelligent conversations can be very stimulating and they keeps minds healthy and active.

Agreed, I can see AI bots enhancing education in many ways. Pushing students to critically think and respond with intent, intelligence, and purpose.

ok so define AI more broadly
AI chat bot no but one of those sex doll things could be a fun stimulent for self play i think a good majority want another human the Ai is still no matter what era is a computer
and at the end of the day no one can make it human........
