This is a tough one to answer. I don't like confrontation in general, but at times it can't be avoided and it is best to face it head on. The reason is because the longer you avoid the issue causing the confrontation, the worse it gets.

I'm a little frightened by intense lightning storms. So though I would really want to (because it would be an amazing picture), I don't think I would ever do so due to my inclination to avoid being outdoors in thunderstorms.

Yes, if telling the lie would protect the person. Though it might be selfish to think I am protecting them, I think telling a lie in that scenario could be for the best. I do think in general it is best to tell the truth as you'll be better off in the long run.
