I think people often use the internet for sheer escapism. Let's face it you can adopt any persona you like and who's going to know the difference? You can be sexy or slutty, funny or serious etc. But you can't chop and change on one site or you'll quickly find yourself 'outed'.
I see a lot more in text than people may think also. When you're more mature, or with more life experience you can quickly spot patterns of behaviour that don't ring true.
