The larvae filter water and provide food for fish, while the adults act as pollinators and food sources for birds and bats.
There's no real purpose except that they simply survive and are hard to wipe out, but......
Only a fraction of the 3,500+ known species bite humans, and it is strictly the females that do so......I think I might be a mosquito
