We are seeing some scary political shifts internationally at the moment so any leadership severe left or right will inevitably become ‘extreme’ because it’s based on agenda, vested interests, career and fear. Any form of nationalism breaking through now will sadly fall to fascism under extreme rule.

I agree . The Nazis considered themselves Nationalists. Fear is one of the biggest motivators. But one extreme shift triggers another. The shift in the rhetoric from some of the Democrats that have announced runs for Presiden.t show that . But it's also what some in the Democratic base want to hear. Add to that the fact that both sides sometimes are asking for things that can't happen. It is a mess that will only get worse. But maybe people will tire and some will move more to the center.
