The 50% of genome we share with bananas (and all other plants/animals) is the DNA portion which contains protein making information, which is probably 1-2% of our total DNA set.

Think about it: if we shared 50% of our DNA with bananas, we'd make our own potassium and other nutrients, eliminating need for bananas.
