Fun fact: we don't share 50% of our DNA with bananas, but all animals share the same basic instruction set of a single-celled organism from four billion years ago, because living things consist of proteins, cells which need to know how replicate themselves.

The 50% of genome we share with bananas (and all other plants/animals) is the DNA portion which contains protein making information, which is probably 1-2% of our total DNA set.
