Yep, best decision I ever made. I wasn't exactly swimming in scholarship offers coming out of high school. I was also in that large "middle area" where you don't qualify financially for grants, but you don't have nearly enough to fund higher education. And I truly hoped to avoid student loans. So I worked my ass off to put myself through junior college (with the help of my parents) and when I wasn't working, I was immersing myself in the music theater program knowing that was my best shot at a scholarship to a 4-year university. I wasn't a very good student in high school, but became one at JC. And it all paid off. I received several scholarship offers, a few of which were full ride. I accepted the one that fit me best, although it meant leaving my beloved South. But it was the best decision I ever made. And it never would have been possible without first attending a junior college. I will sing the praises of the junior college route all day long!
I teach at one. They are great places to save money, figure out what you want to study and get some of the lower-level classes out of the way so you can focus on your major at a four-year institution. Every year I have a ton of students transfer to bigger univeritiuni and they will only need to go there for two years to finish their degrees since they did two years at a CC. What are you looking to study?
My mum is a professor at a community college back in Texas (where my parents and brothers live but I live in Louisiana) and it’s a great way to save loads of money! I went my two years before transferring to a uni here and I’m graduating this summer!
