Comedy - let's share a laugh

His Best Stunts - Buster Keaton

In the world of silent comedy there are two main camps, Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. I'm firmly in the Keaton camp. He was whimsical, never an active creator of mischief, havoc just followed in the wake of his best intentions. He also always did his own, self designed stunts. A remarkable man whom Hollywood did the dirty on (along with so many others) with the advent of the sound era.

Richard Ayoade & Noel Fielding on The Big Fat Quiz

For those who know these two, enjoy! For those who don't, strap your brain in and see what a pretty mainstream comedy panel quiz show can be like. This is why I'm so glad I grew up with a steady diet of English comedy, its always been so much more crazy than anyone else's.

Soap

This is the full first episode of a then ground breaking series that parodied the American tv melodramas that were as a genre termed 'soap operas'. Brilliantly written and performed, the role by Billy Crystal as an openly gay man just hadn't existed before and he was advised by numerous people to not do it as it was considered to be a career destroying move. The series was a huge success and made him a star, but was at its best for the first two series.

@Vanessa_Agogo Thank you very much. I always appreciated Dave Allen. I guess it was back in the late 70's in Chicago, the Public Broadcasting Service used to carry his show - maybe it was later - I'm so old I can't remember anything - lol.
I meant to comment on the Eddie Izzard clip too. It was around Spring 2008, he came to Kansas City and I took my daughter. Out here we have a group of extremists (extremely fond of seeing themselves on the news that is) called the Westboro Baptist Church. They like to protest loudly at solider's funerals and such saying God killed the soldiers because the Army was allowing homosexuals to serve. I'm sure you can picture this crowd. Anyway, Eddie came on stage with some make up on saying he wasn't intending to do so but because WBC was protesting his show, he couldn't say "no." He also started out sharing a short story of progress the world had made since Magna Carta and things would look up but then you'd get a Charles II - just a reminder and a warning to us that things can move backward. I find that I think about his warning often these days.

So, Suzy's old take on religion:

David Mitchell

An assortment of clips from yet another one of the brilliantly funny and intelligent crop of contemporary English comedians. A big personal fave.

... 5 chickens there's your lot ...that's all Tesco's got- lol
and Jimmy really got on Susie Dent there with the "what have you been looking into recently"

Upstart Crow - BBC Studios

A selection of bits from s2 featuring David Mitchell as the somewhat hapless William Shakespeare. The term 'upstart crow' was originated by Robert Greene (the villainous character seen in these clips) in his 1592 pamphlet entitled "Groatsworth of Wit" which was a direct insult of Shakespeare.

Nichols & May Examine Doctors (complete album) - Mike Nichols and Elaine May

Now here's a real treat from that golden age of American radio comedy. Delivered in a totally deadpan style, these two went down an absurdist/satirical pathway poking fun at a wide variety of everyday life. Their dialogue was totally ad lib and only came together via editing as they were both prone to constantly laughing at what each other was coming up with in response. The final track of this album is an example of an unedited recording session.

After breaking up, Mike Nichols went on to become an outstanding stage (Barefoot In The Park with Robert Redford, The Odd Couple) and film (The Graduate, Catch-22, Silkwood, Primary Colors) director, receiving the 1968 Best Director Oscar for The Graduate (it won 7 in total). Sadly Elaine May fell into relative obscurity and didn't really emerge until the film "A New Leaf" in which she wrote, directed and co-stared with Walter Matthau which was highly successful.

QI - the rude bits

Considering what this lot are like normally, just imagine what they're like when even they think they're pushing it.
