Do you sleep "correctly"?

As someone with chronic insomnia and takes medication in order to sleep. Some of these are...interesting to say the least.

I've done segmented sleep (not on purpose) Sometimes i'll wake up and i'll scroll on my phone for a bit, or eat, or read or whatever then go back to bed. Every time i've done this, I find it very difficult to wake up when my alarm goes off.

I wonder if there is such a thing as enough sleep. I can sleep 8 hours and still be tired

I feel that sticking to a consistent sleep schedule where you go to bed at the same time every day, wake up at the same time every day. Can be very helpful and has helped me find my sleep rhythm. I rarely feel tired unless i'm waking up too much during the night or staying up too late. When at my worst insomnia I stayed up for 2-3 days at a time then slept for an entire day afterwards.

Have any of you tried strenuous exercise towards the end of second half of the day? Supposedly really helps with sleep.

I personally take 3-5mg melatonin every few days or so.

Yeah i've tried most things lol. Exercise, melatonin, benadryll at night, cutting out caffeine. Even nonsense advice like yoga, hiking, changing your diet (right now i'm trying to lose weight so i've been doing the diet thing and exercise a lot.) Ambien is the only thing that keeps me on schedule.

Several hundred squats and half that amount of push-ups, with calf jumps over four hours every other day, with five mile walks or jogs on alternating days will cause weight loss like mad.

Honestly i've only been walking 3-4 miles a day and plateauing. Maybe mixing it up with this would help me out lol. Good idea.

I'd seek doctor's advice. Sleep apnea is known to cause that, but there could be other issues.
I go to the doctor on a regular basis, I've never been a good sleeper but also getting older has helped me sleep better so that's good

Recently started melatonin 5 mg since I am perimenopausal, take 20 minutes before bedtime, so far good, weird strong dreams, not sure if associated, probably not

Melatonin supplementing helps you achieve deeper sleep, so weird and vivid dreams will definitely happen.

I'd avoid using melatonin daily for extended periods, or even permanently. Take breaks from melatonin weekly or every few days, especially at higher doses.

There's supposed studies suggesting that it helps people with migraines, helps to control high blood pressure a little bit (stabilize, rather?) , boost immune system and there's a suggestion that it decreased libido if taken frequently enough.

Some people combine calcium, magnesium and zinc with melatonin for further increasing sleep quality (calcium/magnesium/zinc supposedly acts like a mild muscle relaxant).

For me, when I was working a lot some time ago, melatonin supplement was a game changer. I always need less sleep and achieve deeper sleep with 3-5mg, but it probably doesnt have the same effect on everyone.

This information, for example, doesnt seem accurate when it comes to melatonin, because I experience a huge benefit when I use it (perhaps supplementation simply is not for everybody):

We don't all have the same genetic makeup, so your mileage may vary just as with everything else.

I find that exercise (namely cycling) in the evening helps me sleep.

Someone told me to once try putting lavender spray mist on my pillow, so I bought some. It gave me nightmares. Never again.

@Busty_Nerd, on a side note, if you track your walking on Strava, there are plenty of interesting challenges to keep you motivated.

I do use strava actually! It shows me data, distance and calories and other things that's helpful when I log my physical activity in my fitness app. I use it every day.

I’m now frantically looking for you on Strava!!! :p

It’s a great app, but it’s also my cycling tracking nemesis. It taunts me when I’ve not cycled enough in a week. :(

That keeps me awake. I end up bouncing all over the walls and go to sleep later. However it does induce deeper sleep.

I can confirm strenuous exercising towards the second half of the day helps with sleep. It just feels like my day's been "reset" and combining that with the endorphins released, my mind is put to ease regardless of what occurred earlier that day. I would definitely recommend giving it a try!
